Recently people’s lives have been impacted by environmental disasters as well as a global pandemic. The ability to continue to grow, prosper and to live life depends on the ability to be flexibility and adjust to new situations. Those individuals who have mastered social emotional (SE) skills will be in a better position to embrace changes and to continue their lives in ways that are different but fulfilling.
To develop social emotional skills that will support meeting your goals you should:
- Recognize and manage your emotions. It is always good to embrace one’s feelings. Acting based on emotions typically leads to bad decisions. Own your feelings and seek to understand them. Then make decisions based on reason and logic.
- Demonstrate caring and concern for others. By putting the needs of others before your own you multiply the resources that are at your disposal. The practice of focusing your attention away from yourself gives your practice in not only demonstrating empathy. These acts of kindness also helps you to regulate your emotions.
- Establish positive relationships. Relationships can be the family that you are born into or the individuals that you decide to let in. your life. Although you can’t choose your family, you can select the way that you engage with them. For individuals you select to bring in your life make sure that they add value and support your life’s goals.
- Make responsible decisions. Every decision we make not only impacts us, but the people around us. Decisions should be well thought out and should consider long term implications. Ensure that the decisions that you are making have as many positive impacts as possible.
- Handle challenging situations constructively. Life brings everyone challenges. How those challenges are handled is more important than the challenges. It is important to gain control of your emotions and to handle situations by thinking through matters and applying reason.
Developing social emotional skills is key to achieving goals that lead to success.
